Our thanks to the Waiheke Boating Club for giving us free hardstand space. The projected 4 weeks haul-out turned into 10 weeks as our two apprentices were simultaneously working on 3 other boats. We achieved all the tasks on the list – the two lead ballast keels fitted neatly onto the existing keel, new rudder and skeg, chainplates, cap rail beautifully varnished, and a topside paint job. As well, we replaced the old leaky skylight with a larger one, rebuilt the main companionway, made a new steel tiller and connected up the steering gear.

“Kate” was re-launched on 24th May, looking good and simply asking for more progress to get sailing.

The interior work comes next, as winter sets in. Bulkheads and knees for strength, mast partners, water tanks and accommodation; then she ‘ll have to be hauled out again to fit the engine, propeller and shaft.
The priority now is fundraising, for the big ticket items – engine $11,000, prop and shaft $4,000, sails $11,000. We have an exciting scheme in the planning stages which will cover part of the costs, of which more later, but right now we are relying on your generosity.
