One man, one boat, two thousand miles. Waiheke Working Sail is in need of financial support to continue its efforts on the classic wooden cutter Kate. As a fantastic fundraiser idea, WWS trustee Mike Delamore has volunteered to set sail aboard Cavatina, his 10-metre sloop sailboat, for a solo circumnavigation around New Zealand to spread the word and raise awareness of the importance of seamanship, seafaring skills and the Waiheke Working Sail trust’s efforts to keep those alive in the Hauraki Gulf. To support our fundraiser for Waiheke Working Sail, please considering donating now through Givealittle.org.nz!
Mike, who has had a lifetime of boating experience and sailed over 50,000 miles, is busy prepping the Cavatina for her voyage from Matiatia to Matiatia and is set to leave sometime in the next week if weather is favourable enough. He estimates to be on the sea for around three weeks total, making minimal stops along the way.
During his journey, Mike will be able to provide real-time, 24/7 tracking through PredictWind.com’s tracking app which is viewable to all on our webpage dedicated to Cavatina’s movements. If you’re on Waiheke Island, you can also pick up a copy of Gulf News each week to read updates on what Mike has been up to. We will be posting any stories, photos, or videos Mike sends here on our website as well as on our Facebook page.
The official launch date is TBD, but we will update everyone as soon as we know when Cavatina is ready to set sail!
