After passing by Cape Reinga with ease, Mike and Cavatina ran into some increasing winds and deteriorating weather on Thursday with winds reaching up to around 40 knots. Incredibly, even amidst being tossed around on rocky seas, Mike has been able to type blog posts to keep us updated! He’s fairly regular with the posting, so be sure to check out the tracking page to read all of his entries.
On Friday morning, Cavatina hit into some big waves and upon crashing down to the bottom of a trough, Mike found that the autopilot ram had been sheared off. Luckily, Mike is always prepared and had a spare one on board. It was quick refit, but if the spare ram breaks off in similar conditions he will be forced to stop at the nearest port to order a replacement. That would obviously push out his scheduled check in date at Deep Cove by a bit, so hopefully it doesn’t happen!
Our fundraising campaign is going very well and we are incredibly humbled by the generosity of our supporters, in New Zealand and abroad. We are currently sitting at $2970 donated to this fundraising event and we are so very grateful for the assistance. If it is at all possible for you to make a donation, please consider doing so at our Givealittle page.
Please note that you can also contribute to Waiheke Working Sail in other ways, including purchasing a special limited edition signed/numbered print of acclaimed fine artist David Barker’s painting of the Kate for $250.00 (NZD). This purchase is considered a charitable donation and can be claimed on your taxes like any other charitable gift. There were only 100 signed/numbered prints made and many have been sold. See our Support Us page for more information about David Barker’s beautiful prints.
